Maryknoll Retreat and Meetings 2013

Retreat Day #1

Today was the first day of the retreat for the assembled group of Maryknollers. The leader this year is Fr. Peter Phan, the head of the theology department of Georgetown University.

Sami Scott and Steve Chinnavaso Breakfast at the Salesian Center is from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, and at 8:00 AM there is morning prayer. We have through the years been blessed with talented musicians in our group, and this year Sami Scott and Steve Chinnavaso added their skills to morning prayer.

Fr. Peter Phan Eight or nine years ago, Fr. Peter Phan, the head of the theology department at Georgetown University, was our speaker and this year he has returned. He has a lively and engaging speaking style that complements well his challenging ideas and understandings of theology.

Paul Masson and Rosealva During the morning talks, Paul Masson and Rosealva Sandi took notes in their different fashions.

The opening song for the liturgy At the end of the morning, we moved to chapel for a liturgy.

Welcoming the Cambodian newcomers On this first day at the first liturgy, all those coming new to the Maryknoll Asia South region were officially welcomed. The first group to step forward were the five new people going to Cambodia: Steve Chinnavaso, Olga Pacumbaba, Ed Riehl, James Havey, and Nancy Davies, here being given a gift by Maria Montello.

Welcoming the Thailand newcomers Then two members of the Philippines Catholic Lay Mission movement were welcomed to Thailand. Lenette Bertumen and Vangie Pico were greeted and presented shawls by Bro. John Beeching.

Lunch time Then it was time for lunch and Nora Malawin, Elizabeth Kato, and Juana Encalada served themselves. The food is especially good at this center.

Learning a meditation posture Before the evening prayer, John Beeching (right) demonstrated some positions for good posture for sitting in meditation.

Kevin Conroy is organizing the morning and evening prayers this year and led the prayer this evening.
